Villagers fear a '2012'
A MOUNTAIN created by the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan Province has sparked concern among villagers because it is still burning and giving out smoke after more than two years.
Rumors started spreading that the smoke showed the earth was heating up from its core, a sign of even bigger earthquakes, or even doomsday as described in the recent disaster blockbuster "2012."
The mountain was formed during the earthquake like many other young mountains in Sichuan. But this one, 300 meters from Longping Village in Beichuan County, was giving out heat and smoke and an acrid smell from a 3-meter wide and 70-meter long strip, news Website SCOL.com.cn reported yesterday.
People could not get too near to the mountain because of the heat. The smoke turned dark from pure white one month ago and the odor became stronger.
According to local villagers, a sulfur mine was buried under the new mountain. They suspect that the underground sulfur has been burning since the earthquake. No environmental official had come to check, the report said.
An engineer with a Sichuan mining research team said only a field test could clear up the matter.
