Villagers find 15 dead babies
FIFTEEN dead babies labeled as medical waste have been found by residents along a river bank in Jining City of east China's Shandong Province.
The gruesome discovery was made under a bridge on Sunday evening. Some of the remains were rotten but medical tags were still visible on their feet, recording their weight and parents' names, according to The Beijing Times today.
One of the bodies fished from the river was wrapped in a plastic bag labeled as medical waste. There was no information to identify the hospital.
A resident living nearby said he was walking on the river bank when he found the first body. He thought it was only a plastic doll and screamed when he touched it and found it was a dead baby, the report said.
His scream attracted other villagers who helped to collect all 15 bodies scattered on the river bank or floating in the water.
Residents have buried most of the bodies as no parents have claimed them, nor has a funeral home collected them.
Health authority official Zhong Haitao said the babies may have been stillborn or aborted. Zhong said the hospital should be held "responsible for improper disposal of medical waste," and investigation was continuing.
