Villagers grow wealth with farming venture

SOME 13 million yuan (US$2.15 million) — paid in banknotes weighing 156 kilograms — was paid out to villagers in southwestern Sichuan Province as year-end bonuses from a village-run agricultural company.

Seven villagers from Jianshe Village were appointed to watch over the money beforehand and three spent the night on a bed of cash after the money was picked up from the bank on Monday, West China Metropolis Daily reported.

“We lay on 8 million yuan and took another 4.2 million yuan as pillows,” villager Jin Hongzhong said.

“It was uncomfortable lying on so much cash as it was too hard,” he added.

Excitement was palpable as nearly 340 households rushed to claim their dividends in the yard of the village committee on Tuesday morning.

It took village officials nearly three hours to pass out the money.

Villagers received amounts ranging from tens of thousands of yuan to hundreds of thousands.

Jin Ou was the biggest winner, with a bonus of 300,000 yuan, the newspaper reported.

“The weather was so cold and I had to count money for a long time until my hands were exhausted,” Jin said.

Local villagers pooled their resources to start the agricultural company in 2010 and it brings in hefty profits every year.

Jianshe Village isn’t an isolated case of rural communities making fortunes from businesses they started.

In 2012, in Changjiang Village in eastern Jiangsu Province, 300 kilograms of gold and the same weight of silver was distributed among some 3,000 residents.
