Villagers held hostage while their houses pulled down

POLICE in northeast China are investigating a case of forced demolition, in which nearly 100 mobsters attacted more than 20 villagers before robbing and taking their houses down.

The men armed with sticks and hammers surrounded the houses of a villager surnamed Zhang and forced his family and 20 tenants out by knocking off the windows with hammer yesterday afternoon in Youjia Village in Dalian, Liaoning Province, China Radio reported today.

They pushed them into vans and drove them to the foot of a mountain and held them in detention. Some tenents got beaten up for disobeying their order.

After a five-hour hostage, the villagers were released and Zhang found his 11 houses torn down to pieces.

Nothing except some pillows and quits were left on the ground. Zhang said his savings, home appliances and jewelries he bought for his wife were all missing.
