Villagers missing after trash dump protest
SIX villagers in a southwest China county have been arrested and another eight are missing after their battle to stop a government's plan to bury garbage near their homes.
Villagers assume the missing eight have also been detained by police, they told today's China Economic Times newspaper.
The warrant said they were arrested for "hindering government work, said Liu Zhengjiao from Fuxing Village in Guilin City's Guanyang County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Liu's husband and father-in-law were among the arrested villagers.
They began a petition in July last year, when Guanyang's county government decided to build a trash burial site in the village.
Villagers said it is illegal for the county government to open a rubbish dump without consulting the 3,600-plus residents. The site is near their main water source, Guanshui Creek, they added.
