Villagers’ pollution misery set to end soon

RELIEF may be in sight for villagers in southern China’s Guangdong Province whose local reservoir has been severely polluted by a nearby landfill site.

Residents in Jiufei’e Village complain that water in Tongsha Reservoir — a reserve water source for the village — is no longer safe for drinking, washing vegetables or swimming in, Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

The water has become too rich in nutrients due to around 100 cubic meters of brown waste leaching into it each day from the landfill.

The landfill was created 18 years ago and now contains 2.6 million cubic meters of rubbish, with 240 tons added each day.

However, a station for treating liquid leaking out of the dump should be finished at the end of this month.

It will be able to treat 250 tons of liquid each day.

The station project on the landfill site was approved by the Dongguan government in 2010, and work began the next year.

The program has been beset by delays over payments, but the town government has said it will punish the construction company if it fails to finish the station by the end of this month.

Dongguan environmental protection bureau has listed the water in Tongsha Reservoir as fifth grade, suitable only for use in agriculture and landscaping projects.
