Villagers struggle for compensation
VILLAGERS who had land grabbed and destroyed by crooked officials in Hebei Province have found it difficult to get compensation even after the officials were convicted.
The original land owners in Nanjiao Village in Shijiazhuang City said they were overjoyed when hearing that eight officials had received sentences ranging from 15-year jail terms to a suspended death penalty in October, The Beijing News reported yesterday.
The officials were accused of garnering government subsidies of 60 million yuan (US$9 million) for projects they claimed to build on 4 million square meters of land. The actual land measured only 933,800 square meters.
However, this land was obtained through illegal forceful demolition. Villagers said the supplies of power and water were cut and they had no choice but to move, the newspaper said.
One land administrator, Xu Li, said the government is considering paying the victims with money confiscated from the convicted officials.
