Villagers to get day in court over lost statue
A COURT in southeast China’s Fujian Province has accepted a lawsuit from a group of local villagers seeking the return of a 1,000-year-old Buddha statue they claim was stolen 20 years ago, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.
According to the plaintiffs, the current holder of the piece is an art collector in the Netherlands.
The statue is particularly precious to the residents of Yangchun in Fujian as it contains a mummified monk. They are seeking the return of the piece, which was worshipped as a god in the village.
As well as the Chinese suit, a team of seven lawyers employed by the villagers will bring a parallel litigation against the owner in the Netherlands, the report said.
The missing piece was spotted last year after it was included in an exhibition titled “Mummy World” at the Hungarian Natural History Museum.
