Virus attack rocks microblog site

A FAST-SPREADING, click-to-explode virus swept across Sina's microblogging site weibo.com yesterday evening, marking the first serious virus attack in China's microblog history.

The virus attack affected at least 32,000 users. The microblogging site has about 100 million users.

The attack occurred about 7:30pm yesterday as tens of thousands of microblog users were stunned to see their friends twittering eye-catching texts or pictures with links.

Such texts included download links for porn movies and naked pictures of famous TV stars. But with a single click on any of the links, the virus would attack, taking control of the microblog account and automatically twittering several other similar virus-contained links to others.

An official announcement at 9:15pm warned site users not to click on any suspicious links. The corrupted links were fixed 25 minutes later.

News website ifeng.com said the hacker was a microblog user named "hellosamy."
