Virus kills 5th panda at breeding center
A fifth panda has died after contracting canine distemper virus at a breeding center in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province.
Male panda Long Long, 6, was diagnosed with the virus on December 24 and isolated for treatment. He tested negative on March 2 but two weeks later fell sick and again tested positive.
Yesterday’s Sanqin Daily said he suffered kidney failure and died on Wednesday.
The center had its first case on December 6 when 8-year-old Cheng Cheng was diagnosed with the virus and died three days later.
Da Bao, also 8, died on January 4, followed by 10-year-old Xin Xin on January 23 and 6-year-old Feng Feng on February 4.
Three other pandas had recovered, said Han Xueli, an office director with the Shaanxi Rare Wild Animal Rescue, Breeding and Research Center.
“Experts said the disease has a long incubation period,” Han told the newspaper.
It is highly contagious and is particularly prevalent in winter and spring.
The center currently has 20 pandas. To prevent the virus spreading, it is disinfecting on a daily basis.
