Visitor killed by elephants
A VISITOR from Myanmar was trampled to death by wild Asian elephants in southwest China’s Yunnan Province the day after he arrived in the country, local authorities said yesterday.
The tragedy happened at about 2am on Tuesday when rampaging elephants tore through a watermelon field in Meng’a Township.
The 29-year-old had only been in the country since Monday.
Wild Asian elephants are under state protection in China, and about 300 live in Yunnan.
Numbers have risen in recent years, along with an increase in clashes with humans. Elephants killed two villagers in Yunnan last month and a third on June 6.
