Volcano scientist refutes acid rain rumor
A VOLCANO scientist has denied a rumor that the erupting Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland will bring the worst acid rain to China in the past 750 years.
"It's baseless," Professor Lu Jiaqi with Chinese Academy of Sciences today told www.ce.cn.
The acid rain rumor was widely distributed online this morning, advising people to avoid being caught in the rain because it will cause various skin diseases.
But Liu calmed the panic by citing the world's largest volcano eruption in 1991 in the Philippines' Pinatubo volcano that resulted in over 700 deaths.
The eruption, 100 times stronger than the Iceland volcano, discharged 20 million tons of sulfur dioxide and brought down global temperatures by 1 degree Celsius, he said.
Despite that, it had little effect on China, he said.
