Wage tiff triggers fatal bombing
A DISGRUNTLED former employee killed himself and injured two people yesterday when he blew himself up in an office building in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, police said.
The man, identified as Han Wushun, 42, originally from southwest China's Sichuan Province, arrived at the office building in downtown Urumqi at around 1pm with a black bag.
Han threatened the office workers and demanded that the company, Xinjiang Beixin Road and Bridge Construction Co Ltd, give him 4,500 yuan (US$662) in unpaid wages, police said. He had sued the company for the money but lost the case last year.
Han walked into the first floor of the building and talked to an office worker, saying, "Society is unfair. I don't want to live any more."
Three office workers were trapped in the room. One escaped while Han was not watching him and alerted other occupants of the building to evacuate, police said.
The two trapped men, Yang Tao and Lu Jianzhong, tried to reason with Han in the office, police said. They rushed out of the room when Han tried to connect the wires of the bomb.
Yang sustained injuries to his face and Lu to his hands. Yang was sent to a hospital, but his condition was not life-threatening, police said.
