A hotpot eatery was closed down temporarily after a waiter was detained on suspicion of scalding a customer after they got into a trivial argument in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, Qianjiang Evening News reported today.
The female customer surnamed Lin was in intensive care at PLA No. 118 Hospital. Doctor Chen Rujun estimated she would require one to two months of treatment, which could cost 100,000 yuan (US$15,610) to 200,000 yuan, the paper said.
The altercation occurred on Monday when Lin, 29, was having dinner with her mother, sister and 7-month-old son. She asked the waiter surnamed Zhu, 17, to add some water to their hotpot. He ignored the request and an argument quickly ensued, the newspaper reported, citing police.
Lin told the paper that she demanded to talk to the manager. But Zhu just told her to follow him to the kitchen. She refused. Zhu left and later returned and dumped a pot filled with boiling water on her, according to Lin.
Surveillance videos showed Zhu pouring the boiling water on Lin and dragging her down to the ground, the report said. She was hit and kicked under the table. Her family and other waiters eventually subdued Zhu, the video showed.
Police said Zhu had been detained for intentionally injuring another person.
Doctors told the newspaper that Lin had burns to 42 percent of her body, including her breasts, making it impossible for her to breastfeed her son.
The owner of the restaurant apologized to Lin on Weibo. Lin’s family also said the eatery had promised to cover her medical expenses, the paper reported.
