Wal-Mart buyers were ‘lax’ in fox meat scandal

WAL-MART has been accused of poor supervision of suppliers after fox meat was sold as donkey in Jinan City in the eastern Shandong Province.

Buyers for the store benefited from the lax management, as fox meat costs a fraction of the price of donkey meat, reported the Securities Daily yesterday.

The report said donkey meat sells for 50 yuan (US$8.2) a kilogram. As it is viewed as a healthy food, demand often outstrips supplies.

Fox meat, usually a byproduct of the fur trade, sells for as little as 2 yuan per kilogram, according to a fox farmer.

With such a gap in prices, there is a temptation among unscrupulous suppliers to try to pass off fox as the more expensive donkey meat.

The report claimed it is common for Wal-Mart buyers to receive commission of at least 3 percent on deals.

It accused Wal-Mart of not properly evaluating why the meat was so cheap, committing breaches in spot checks and food safety.

An insider said that suppliers passed off fox as donkey because Wal-Mart supervision was lax, with many procedures existing in name only.

Wal-Mart has apologized, offered refunds and compensation and recalled the product in Jinan City.

It is also said to be carrying out an internal investigation.

The scandal came to light last month after a man surnamed Wang asked an institute to test the meat that was sold to him as donkey but tasted strange.

The tests showed that the meat was actually fox.
