Wal-Mart probed over deli鈥檚 鈥榰gly secrets鈥
A WAL-MART store in the southern city of Shenzhen is under investigation following claims that its delicatessen cooked out-of-date meat and bug-infested rice and used filthy oil.
Industrial and commercial watchdog from the city in Guangdong Province has began a probe, the Oriental Morning Post reported yesterday.
The accusations by a member of staff were broadcast this week by Shenzhen SATV 1.
The US retailer has also launched an investigation. But officials from Wal-Mart China said the TV clips can’t directly prove the accusations, the Legal Evening News reported.
In the program, a worker for eight years at the Wal-Mart Honghu store used a hidden camera to record practices.
He said the manager of the delicatessen department started to adopt “cost-effective methods” last year.
While out-of-date products should be thrown away, they were cooked and sold, claimed the member of staff.
And when shoppers returned bug-infested rice, they were given a refund and the rice was used by the deli department.
The whistleblower also said oil was rarely changed.
In January, he fried 155 chicken cuts but five days later found the oil hadn’t been changed.
“The oil is as black as soy sauce but we never change it. We just add some fresh oil every day,” he said.
“Customers trust Wal-Mart because it is among the world’s top 500 enterprises. They have no idea about these ugly secrets,” he said.
Wal-Mart has previously faced controversy in China.
In January, Wal-Mart’s stores in Jinan, in east China’s Shandong Province, were found to be selling fox meat as donkey.
