Wal-Mart recalls tainted donkey products in Jinan
Wal-Mart is recalling all the “Five Spice” donkey meat in Jinan City in the eastern Shandong Province, after they were found to contain fox meat.
The donkey meat is made at a local factory in the province, whose supervisor was detained after test results showed they contained other animal’s meat, according to police in Yucheng City.
The assets of the food supplier have also been frozen after an order was issued on December 31 by the Yucheng City People’s Court.
Customers who bought the donkey meat will be offered refunds and compensation at Wal-Mart stores in Jinan.
An investigation team has also been formed at Wal-Mart to look into the issue.
On December 23, a man, surnamed Wang, in Jinan City first claimed that the so-called donkey meat he bought at Wal-Mart was actually fox meat.
Wang said he thought it tasted strange and so asked an authorized institute to test it.
After testing, the institute concluded it was fox meat, according to a report by Yangcheng Evening News. The report quoted a fox breeder surnamed Xue who said fox meat sells for about 6 yuan (US$1) per kilogram, which is cheaper than donkey meat.
Fox meat can pose health risks to those who eat it, the newspaper report said.
