Walls to hide ugly sights draw criticism

SCREEN walls built by authorities along a highway in a poverty-stricken county have sparked a controversy, People.com.cn reported.

Authorities of Zhangxian County in Gansu Province built the walls to hide shabby houses standing by the highway, but the brick walls occupied the sidewalk used by more than 100 local residents, including schoolchildren.

Local villagers also said the money spent on the walls could have been used to upgrade their houses. "The walls did not benefit us at all and they are useless," said one villager.

Each brick used to build the walls cost one yuan in a county where the average income of farmers was 2,960 yuan (US$475) a year in 2011, according to local statistics.
