Walmart apologizes for selling ordinary pork as organic in Chongqing

WALMART China has apologized for labeling ordinary pork as organic and selling it in three supermarkets in the southwestern city of Chongqing.

Chongqing Industry and Commerce Administration launched a probe into Walmart's chain supermarkets after it had received complaints that ordinary pork was sold as organic at higher prices, Chongqing Evening News reported today.

By comparing the supermarkets' sales and purchase records, the administration found that three supermarkets had profited over 10,000 yuan by selling ordinary pork as organic, which was 10 yuan more expensive per kilogram, from January to August.

Walmart said it was cooperating with the investigation and has initiated an internal check on all pork products.

The three supermarkets were involved in false promotions and fraud, said Tang Chuan, an official with Chongqing Industry and Commerce Administration.

Tang added that the administration would severely punish Walmart for the illegal business practice.
