Wandering wolf meets its end on busy street
POLICE shot dead a wolf in Hefei, capital of Anhui Province, a local newspaper reported yesterday.
The silver grey wolf was wandering on a busy road in the downtown area on Sunday.
A passer-by who called police said she thought it was just a dog but a closer look confirmed it was a wolf, she told the Jianghuai Morning Post.
The animal later settled on a patch of grassland, howling from time to time.
But it became nervous after it noticed approaching police officers and tried to escape. It was shot dead to prevent it attacking anyone on the crowded street.
Police found a collar on the wolf's neck and are looking for its owner. It is illegal to keep a pet wolf.
Some residents said the wolf might have been from one of the city's restaurants who served wolf meat, the newspaper report said.
