Wang swats flies in the fight against corruption

In China’s battle against corrupt “tigers and flies,” Wang Yamin, a county-level disciplinary official in central China’s Henan Province, goes after the low-level flies, not the high-ranking tigers.

Henan implemented its county-level inspection system in 2014. Wang, head of the No. 1 inspection team, said public complaints involved financing, embezzlement and bribery.

In one case, a township government deputy head was found to have accepted bribes totaling 80,000 yuan (US$12,000) to help others secure agricultural project allowances worth up to 200,000 yuan.

Apart from Henan, Shanghai and the provinces of Jiangsu, Shandong, Zhejiang and Shaanxi have also started local inspections.

Yu Guodan, associate professor with the China University of Political Science and Law, said corruption of grassroots officials could seriously damage the image of the Party and the government.

Up to 79 percent of the 44,300 public complaints received by the Henan provincial discipline authority in 2014 were related to low-level officials, according to provincial figures.

“A mosquito sucks a little blood but leaves a large mark, which hurts.

“The Party must spare no efforts to swat them,” Yu said.

A total of 36,911 cases of frugality violations by Party members were investigated in 2015, China’s top disciplinary body said yesterday.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said 49,508 individuals were investigated in those cases, with around 34,000 punished through disciplinary measures.

They has violated the Eight-Point Regulation, which was issued in 2012, calling for frugality in Party members’ work styles and their personal lives.

The most frequent offenses involved the use of official vehicles. Other violations included distributing allowances and sending or accepting gifts or money.
