War game to test PLA
NEARLY 50,000 People's Liberation Army troops from four military regions are expected to participate in a two-month maneuver in the second half of the year, a first in the history of the PLA.
Each of the four military regions - Shenyang, Lanzhou, Jinan and Guangzhou - will dispatch a division to take part in a war game codenamed "Stride Across 2009."
The PLA Air Force will also join in the exercise.
It is the first time that a drill will have involved the deployment of troops across different military command areas.
The drill is a major practice to assess and improve PLA troops' overall combat capacity and promote the military training upgrade, according to the head of the military training and arms department of Chief of the General Staff.
The war games will test the PLA's capacity in command and decision-making, joint operations of land and air troops, operations in complicated electro-magnetic conditions, paratrooper assault operations, simulated battles, and comprehensive exercises by specialist units.
More than 60,000 vehicles and heavy equipment will be involved.
The Air Force and the Army Aviation troop will also send men and various aircraft to take part in the drills, sources said.
