Warning issued after truck spills toxic chemical into river
A chemical tank truck fell off a 3-meter-high bridge in Lishui City, Zhejiang Province at 2am this morning, spilling 30 tons of toxic methyl acetate into the river.
Rescuers pulled two trapped workers to safety and said the leakage might cause serious water pollution, China News Service reported.
Local residents have been notified to stop using water from the river and eating its dead fish.
Methyl acetate is a highly inflammable chemical liquid. Its vapor can irritate the upper respiratory tract and the eyes, and direct contact with the liquid can even hurt the central nervous system. Frequent or prolonged exposure to it may cause anesthesia, experts said.
