Warning over bogus bank website

THE Hong Kong Monetary Authority yesterday warned people to avoid a suspected fraudulent website with the domain name www.asiaoffshorebank.com.
The website is apparently operated by the Asia Offshore Bank, which claims to offer various banking services to people in Hong Kong.
But the authority warned that this bank is not authorized to carry on a banking business or to take deposits in Hong Kong, nor does it have approval to establish a local representative office.
The authority has referred the case to the Hong Kong police for investigation. Anyone who has provided his or her personal information to the website or has conducted any financial transactions through the website should contact a local police station or the Commercial Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong police.
The authority said given the global nature of the Internet, people should verify the status of any organization making use of the Internet to solicit deposits from the public.
