Waste picker senior trying to salvage bottle trapped 12 hours in riverbed

A senior waste picker was saved on Friday after being trapped inside heavy silt on the riverbed in Xuancheng city, Anhui Province, for nearly 12 hours, local media reported today.

The senior, surnamed Ren and in his 70s, is living all by himself in a local village and earns incomes by salvaging reusable garbage, the Xuancheng Daily reported. He had tried to pick up an empty water bottle from the bed of the dry river Thursday evening but the silt was too deep and he was quickly trapped and kept sinking, he reportedly said after receiving treatment at hospital.

He reportedly said he had struggled to keep his head and hands above the silt in the hope of being discovered. About 12 hours later, a passer-by found his waving hands soaked in mud on the riverbed and alarmed police.

He was finally pulled up to safety with help of three police officers and two passers-by who had volunteered to help. The rescuers had to stand waist-deep in the thick silt when helping the senior, the report said. The rescuers spent nearly an hour carefully and slowly removing the senior out of the mud.

"Lying on the ground, the old man was like a 'mud man'. He was too weak to speak a word and his body was all trembling. It's very miserable," a police officer reportedly said after the rescue was completed.

Police warmed him up with quilts and he was later rushed to hospital for treatment.
