Watch gifts strike wrong note

A POOR county in south Yunnan Province has come under criticism after announcing it would spend 600,000 yuan (US$94,047) on watches for lawmakers and advisory body members.

A statement on the Funing County website said the local government was to buy 978 Shanghai brand watches for deputies to the county's People's Congress and members of its Political Consultative Conference, China News Service reported.

The model costs between 700 and 800 yuan, with a discount for bulk orders.

An official said the unit price should be less than 600 yuan - within expenses limits for deputies and members.

The county official also claimed it was "very normal" to give souvenirs to deputies and members.

But Lin Zhe, a professor of Political and Law Research Department of Central Party School in Beijing, said it was a waste of taxpayers' money to present expensive and unnecessary gifts to people attending conferences.
