Watchdog: Keep web stars off TV
INTERNET celebrities and "scandalous figures" should be banned from Chinese television, a top official with the state TV watchdog has said.
TV show producers who breached such a ruling would face a hefty fine.
Speaking at a forum on innovation in Chinese television in Wuhan, Hubei Province, at the weekend, Li Wei, a deputy director with China's State Administration of TV, Film and Radio, said that no TV shows should be allowed to invite "Internet celebrities" and "scandalous" figures as guests.
"It has become a trend for some TV shows to invite so-called online celebrities and those who are famous for outrageous statements and behavior," Li said.
"We must correct this mistake immediately."
The official said TV programs should stop trying to boost ratings through "ugly" content.
Shanghai TV channels said yesterday that they would strictly enforce a ban.
But some other Chinese TV stations argued it was still reasonable to invite people who became famous on the Internet through more laudable behavior - such as grassroots pop singers.
Many Chinese web users also said the watchdog should make exceptions for online stars with a positive message.
