Watchdog investigates
THE discipline watchdog in Jiangsu Province is investigating a former senior official in charge of company registration approval, after an online post claimed his family owned real estate properties and companies worth nearly 180 million yuan (US$27 million).
The post on Tianya.com detailed the address and price of three apartments and five shops allegedly under the name of Wang Yiping, the former deputy director of the Industrial and Commercial Bureau in Hai'an County, Beijing News said yesterday.
To prove it was real, the post attached two scanned housing ownership certificates, and pointed out that Wang mortgaged a house valued at 100,000 yuan in 2006 for which he received loans totaling 8 million yuan.
An official of the bureau where Wang worked said Wang's fortune had nothing to do with his position but said it may come from his wife, who was a well-known businesswoman. The official said he was transferred to another position last year.
Hang Yajun, an official of the Hai'an County Commission for Discipline Inspection, said they had received reports before the post emerged and the investigation is ongoing.
In a previous media interview, Wang defended himself as a "law-abiding and low-profile" official who was set up by others.
