Watchdog issues drug warning
CHINA’S drug watchdog yesterday issued a circular to remind patients and medical workers of the possible adverse effects of taking atypical anti-psychotic drugs used to treat acute and chronic schizophrenia.
The document, issued by the China Food and Drug Administration, said that compared with traditional anti-psychotic drugs, atypical ones show a stronger curative effect.
The adverse effects caused by atypical anti-psychotic drugs include dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia and epilepsy, it said.
They might also cause reduced immune function, increased blood lipids, weight gain, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, and diabetes.
The administration suggested patients follow doctors’ prescriptions and know about preventative measures to deal with adverse effects. Doctors should increase monitoring of patients taking the drugs.
