Watchdog to probe graft claims against Wuhan deputy mayor

THE Commission for Discipline Inspection in central China's Hubei Province will probe allegations that the deputy mayor of the provincial capital Wuhan solicited bribes, extended black market loans and abused his power.

A spokesperson for the disciplinary watchdog said the commission took the claims seriously and would hold the deputy mayor, Yuan Shilan, responsible if the allegations were found true, local news portal Cnhubei.com reported today.

The graft claims were made by Lan Shili, jailed boss of the bankrupt East Star Airline, in a statement released through his niece Lan Jianmin in Beijing and online yesterday. In the statement he also alleged that Yuan had forged "evidence" that landed him in jail after their relationship had soured.

The disciplinary watchdog said it had received official complaints filed by Lan's relatives in July and have talked with them to get further details.
