Water declared safe after river pollution cleared up
TAP water has met national hygiene standard in Mianyang in southwest Sichuan Province after a local river, the city's main source of drinking water, was polluted by wastes from a manganese plant in a flood.
Residents can start using tap water from noon today, Mianyang city government said in a statement today. It ordered the water plant to continue to monitor its water quality.
Wastes from the Xichuan Minjiang Manganese Plant in Songpan County in Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture were washed into the Fujiang River by heavy rain last week.
The river supplies 70 percent of drinking water to the city's 300,000 residents. News of its pollution triggered panic-buying as people rushed to local stores to stock on bottled water.
