Water from Wujiang River now safe to drink
THE alarm over drinking water pollution in Shaoguan, a city in south China's Guangdong Province, has been cancelled after the level of a toxic chemical element in a local river has dropped.
A high level of stibium was detected in the Wujiang River in late June during a routine test by Shaoguan environmental authorities. Officials traced the toxic substance to mines in the upper reaches of the river, Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.
The mines have been ordered to stop discharging wastes into the river and a monitoring system has been set up there.
Guangdong environmental authorities said the tap water supplied by water plants along the river has met their quality standards.
The Wujiang River is a major tributary of the Beijiang River which ultimately joins the Pearl River.
