Water supplies partially restored
MOST water supplies for some 800,000 residents have been restored in Zhengzhou City, capital of central China's Henan Province, one day after its major water main burst, paralyzing the city's biggest water plant on Wednesday.
Shiyuan Water Plant in Zhengzhou said only a few communities were still suffering disrupted supplies yesterday morning, and that tankers are being used to take water to those residents.
The plant is using standby facilities to supply water.
Workers are still busy fixing the damaged sections of the pipe network under a highway intersection. Several pipes in the network, including a 10-meter one, burst at 10:45am on Wednesday and caused water to flood the streets.
"It will take another 72 hours to fix the damage," a spokesman said.
A possible cause of the accident was the age of the main and the volume of traffic passing above. Authorities are considering changing the pipes' route to solve the issue.
