Water weed makes dramatic arrival

WATER hyacinth has clogged a section of the Pearl River overnight in south China's Guangdong Province.

Yesterday morning, a section of the river running through Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong, was blanketed by a mass of the fast-spreading floating plant, arousing concerns about the water quality of the river as the surface had been clear a day earlier.

The city's environmental regulator sought to explain the dramatic overnight change.

During the flood season, water hyacinth growing rapidly in the upper reaches of the Pearl River was swept to the lower reaches.

Tides left it stranded in the Guangzhou region of the lower part of the Pearl River, said Zhi Wenguang, deputy director with the environmental management office.

Water hyacinth can cause problems for small boats, fishing and can endanger the safety of drinking water.
