Waxberry festival in neighboring county kicks off

The month-long annual waxberry picking festival has opened once again in Xianju County in Shanghai’s neighboring Zhejiang Province, otherwise widely known for it’s reputation as "China's Waxberry Town”.

The price of the early-maturing Xianju waxberry is approximately 40 to 50 yuan (US$6.45-8.05) per kilogram.

Compared to last year’s price, this year’s will be slightly higher  due to rain and less production.

The yield of the Xianju waxberry is expected to be about 70,000 tons this year, compared to the 75,000 tons last year.

Xianju is one of the main production areas of waxberry as well as one of the famous picking spots in China due to its weather and soil conditions.

Another type of waxberry include the Dongkui waxberries, featuring a juicy taste, a reddish purple color and a sweet flavor. They are the largest grown in China and are known as the "waxberry king”. The Dongkui waxberries are expected to hit the market this weekend.

The history of waxberry planting in Xianju can be dated back to more than 1,000 years ago.

Fresh waxberry can only be kept for two to three days after being picked, and it is recommended to soak it in salt water in order to clean it before eating.

The festival will last until July 8.
