‘We will try to enjoy every day’
A mother who contracted HIV 19 years ago and now, along with her husband, has AIDS yesterday told of her family’s experience with the condition.
Xiaoxue believes she was infected through a blood transfusion while delivering her daughter in her hometown in northwest China in 1995. Her daughter, however, is not infected.
Xiaoxue was pregnant again in 2005 and it was then the virus was detected. Her husband was diagnosed soon after. Xiaoxue received medication to block mother-to-infant infection at the Shanghai Public Health Center before she gave birth to her son.
Thanks to the medical intervention, he is also free of the virus.
Xiaoxue said her daughter has been accepted by a good university and her son, now 9 years old, is doing well at school.
“He learned to swim this year,” Xiaoxue wrote in her diary.
Their daughter was told of her parents’ condition in 2011 and she has taken on the task of ensuring they take their medication.
“Our life is now just about the two children and we hope that they can live a happy and healthy life. We will try our best to enjoy every day, which is so precious to us,” Xiaoxue said.
