Wealthy enterprise distributes gold and silver to villagers

A village-owned industrial enterprise in Jiangyin, eastern Jiangsu Province gave each of the nearly 3,000 residents of Changjiang Village a 100-gram gold tablet and a 100-gram silver tablet to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

The Jiangsu Xin Chang Jiang Group, one of the top 20 private enterprises in China, gave out 300kg of gold and 300kg of silver last Saturday, enough to make 12,000 rings.

The village also gave each household a safe to store their valuables, Xinhua News Agency reported today.

"It's heavy and real," a villager surnamed Zhou said about his gold tablet with a dragon icon.

One big family received 700 grams of gold, a village official said, noting that gold retail price recently hit 400 yuan (US$63.52) per gram.

Many families decided to make a gold ring for their daughters and hide the remaining gold as heirloom. "Unmarried young men and women in our village are very popular because of our wealth," a villager surnamed Sun told Xinhua.

Apart from handing out gold and silver, the company also built houses for villagers and distributed its shares and cash dividends to them.
