Website busted for sales of fake cosmetic shots
A WEBSITE that sold dozens of brands of cheap but counterfeit cosmetic injections has been busted by authorities in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
The Guilin-based online store sold 70 brands to beauty parlors, plastic surgery hospitals, private surgeons and beauty seekers, the provincial drug watchdog and police said. The top-selling products were Botox and hyaluronic acid injections, well-known for their non-surgical anti-aging effects such as wrinkle-smoothing. Both were sold at prices up to dozens of times lower than the market, China Central Television reported.
The website, called "pretty for you," set up in 2010, claimed it was the biggest online cosmetic and medical products seller in the nation. But it never sold approved products, officials said.
In China, only hospitals approved for plastic surgery treatment may offer cosmetic injections. Only five imported or domestic cosmetic injections are approved by China's State Food and Drug Administration.
The online store bought substandard cosmetic injections from factories in Shandong, Zhejiang and Guangdong provinces, according to the founder of the website, surnamed Chen.
In one case, the Shandong Guanglong Biochemical Co Ltd, one of the manufacturers, sold injectable doses of fake hyaluronic acid to Chen for 80 yuan (US$12.62) to 100 yuan. Chen doubled the price and sold to local medical clinics, which later charged patients 5,000 yuan each, the program said.
A large number of side effects from fake cosmetic injection medicines have been reported, with some disfigured or even killed.
The China Consumers Commission said about 200,000 Chinese have suffered serious harm from these kinds of cosmetic treatments in the past ten years. Experts said about 70 to 80 percent of these cases are from beauty parlors.
