Wedding leads to disgrace for 14 school heads
FOURTEEN headmasters have been punished after dismissing classes for one day to let teachers go to the wedding of a colleague's son, affecting 2,805 students in 13 schools in a southwest China's town.
The education authority of Hanbing District, Shaanxi Province's Ankang City, announced the penalty on December 31 after receiving online complaints about the canceled classes, today's Chinese Business View newspaper reported.
Principal Wu Fengzhou, of Guanjia Town Central School, held the wedding for his son on a workday, December 28. Since Wu had worked at many local schools, many of his former colleagues asked for leave that day to attend the wedding.
Thirteen of the 14 town schools dismissed classes that day and shifted the lessons to the previous weekend or the following New Year's holiday.
Though the lessons were moved and the teaching schedule was not affected, it was against the rules to randomly shift classes, the education authority said.
Schools must report changes to the authority and get approval beforehand, it added.
Wu was removed from this position and received a stern disciplinary warning, while heads of the 13 schools involved received demerit marks.
