Wen vows to support Macau
CHINESE Premier Wen Jiabao said yesterday that appropriate diversity should be promoted in economic development in Macau and pledged central government support for the city in its endeavors.
Wen said Macau should work to develop modern service industries, including tourism, exhibitions, finance and cultural creativity, make sure the gaming industry develops in an appropriate and orderly way, and strive to build up Macau as a world center of tourism and leisure.
Wen said the central government will continue to unswervingly implement the principles of "one country, two systems" and give full support to the chief executive and the local government in boosting development in Macau.
Wen asked Macau to make full use of favorable policies provided by the central government, strengthen cooperation with the mainland, foster new competitive industries and economic growth points, and fortify its financial risk-resisting abilities.
The Macau government should focus more public expenditure on improving people's standard of living, speeding up construction of public housing, and caring for vulnerable groups, Wen added.
Starting his first official visit to Macau on Saturday morning, Wen attended the opening ceremony of the third Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-Speaking Countries.
Yesterday he visited a community service center, a hospital and a factory following a tour of the Ruins of St ?Paul's and Monte Fort, two of the most iconic landmarks in the?city.
Wen also practiced Taiji with local people for morning exercises and dropped by a local resident's home He left Macau 掳?yesterday.
