Wenzhou official accused of rape

A GOVERNMENT official in east China's Zhejiang Province has been accused of raping a girl under the age of 14, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.

Wenzhou City's Cangnan County police told the Shanghai-based newspaper that they received a complaint by an underage girl on June 12 claiming she had narrowly escaped being raped at a hotel in Lingxi Town.

Another girl, also underage, might have been raped, she told the police.

The two girls went to the hotel with two men surnamed Zhou and Wang after having supper with them, they told police.

Police caught Zhou on June 15 and are hunting for Wang, who was later discovered to be a government official.

Police declined to identify the official. But locals suggest he is the vice director of the Cangnan County Statistics Bureau.

Bureau workers told the newspaper that Wang had not been to his office for several days.
Some said Wang was on leave to take care of his mother who had fallen ill.

Wang was made vice director one month ago, the Oriental Morning Post report said. He used to work with the county's disciplinary supervising body.
