West Lake pavilion collapses
HEAVY thunderstorms rolling through Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province, yesterday afternoon caused the Jixian Pavilion, a popular attraction standing beside West Lake scenic area to fall down.
The collapse occurred about 1pm when rainfall and heavy winds hit the city.
Officials said four wooden pillars of the pavilion couldn't bear the severe weather and suddenly broke and fell into the lake.
Only the top of the pavilion and rubble could be seen after the collapse.
Four people in the pavilion at the time rushed out and no one was injured.
There were few people at the pavilion because many visitors had taken shelter in nearby buildings against the rain, said Chen Zhihua, official with the West Lake management authority.
He said the pillars weren't rotten but of good quality and investigators checked them every month. It was severe wind that destroyed the pavilion, he added.
Also, at least 10 large trees were damaged and some were uprooted.
Local authorities yesterday started to clean up the wreckage after the rain stopped.
Jixian Pavilion had been listed as one of the top 18 scenic spots from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The Hangzhou government rebuilt it in 2002.
The city witnessed the collapse of another scenic attraction on August 12. A memorial wooden arch or pai fang built in an ancient architectural style abruptly fell down, killing two and injuring three others.
