West Lake tourist kills squirrel
A squirrel was killed by a male tourist at West Lake in Hangzhou on Tuesday, triggering public anger, Youth Times reported today.
The incident happened at 4:10pm, when the man rushed over to a camphor tree, knocked the squirrel down from the tree and stepped on its tail. His wife laughed while eating corn on the cob, a witness surnamed Yao wrote on the microblog Weibo.com.
The post had been forwarded nearly 3,000 times as of 9pm yesterday. Many Weibo users expressed outrage that somebody could do something so cruel, Youth Times reported.
Yao also wrote that the squirrel struggled to jump back up the tree, but fell down again because of its injuries and then died.
Some children threw stones at the dead squirrel until their parents stopped them,Yao added.
Some netizens called for better laws to protect wild animals in scenic resorts and tougher penalties for animal abusers, the report said.
