What crowds? says this passenger
A Chinese woman heading home for the Spring Festival had a commercial airline flight all to herself on her journey to Guangzhou.
The woman, surnamed Zhang, posted photos showing rows of empty seats on a China Southern plane as it flew in from Wuhan.
Her flight had been delayed for 10 hours, and other passengers left on earlier flights, leaving Zhang to enjoy personal attention from the plane’s crew.
The experience was tuhao, she said, using a slang term for the nouveau riche.
China Southern schedules showed that the flight is normally operated using a Boeing 737-700 aircraft, which generally seats 137 passengers.
Statistics on website Flightradar24 confirmed that a China Southern flight from Wuhan to Guangzhou on Monday was delayed by 10 hours.
Many people went online to express their envy at Zhang’s good luck in avoiding the enormous crowds that are the norm at this time of the year.
“What a fluke that you went against the big New Year’s current,” was one comment, with the writer noting that the plane would be packed with passengers on its flight back from Guangzhou, a prosperous city that hosts many migrant workers.
But one commenter saw the glass half-empty: “Even under these conditions, they still didn’t upgrade you?”
