When images are illegal
More efforts are needed to protect online images, experts said at a workshop in Beijing.
The workshop, hosted by the Copyright Society of China, was the first to discuss the copyright infringement of online images in China.
Online pictures are often 鈥渟tolen鈥 on popular services such as WeChat and Weibo, and those who post the images usually do not know they are violating copyright rules, experts said.
Wang Ziqiang, an official with the society, said more awareness of intellectual property rights was important. Infringement was not just by individual users but also online organizations, including news providers and large companies.
Yang Dejia, a judge from the Beijing Haidian District People鈥檚 Court, said the court had tried more than 2,800 cases related to online image copyright infringement this year so far.
Lin Qiang, of the Images Copyright Society of China, said the law needed to be updated to meet the new demands of today鈥檚 digital world.
