Whistleblower loses eye in acid attack
A WHISTLEBLOWER who has publicizing cases of government lost his right eye in an acid and knife attack yesterday morning that was believed to be tied to his work.
Li Jianxin, 47, has posted dozens of online exposes about shady ties between businessmen and officials, reports of local mafia-like gangs and other social problems in Huizhou City in south China's Guangdong Province. His year of Internet muckraking has angered many people, Southern Metropolis Daily reported today.
The attack occurred shortly after he left home to drive his son, 6, downtown. His car was suddenly hit in the rear when he was passing a sparsely occupied road, he said.
After he got out of the car, three men in the car behind him walked up to him, throwing sulfuric acid on his back and slashing at him with knives. He could not flee since his son was still in the car, he said.
Zhang Li, a garbage worker living nearby, heard the cries for help and found him lying in a pool of blood. At Li's request, Zhang called Li's wife. She and Li's brother-in-law rushed to the scene and took him to a hospital.
Doctors found he was blinded in his right eye by the knife attack, and he suffered severe burns on the back and left face, two broken fingers and injuries to his wrist. Doctors were unsure whether his fingers could be repaired. A first round of surgery was finished at around 5pm yesterday.
Local police are investigating the case, the paper reported.
