Wife claims professor researched mistresses
A PROFESSOR with the Chinese Academy of Sciences has been detained by police after his wife claimed he misused research funds to support two mistresses and an illegitimate daughter.
Corruption allegations against Duan Zhenhao, a professor in the Institute of Geology and Geophysics and a member of the judging panel for the VM Goldschmidt Award for geochemists or cosmochemists, include falsely claiming travel allowances, according to a statement by the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on its website yesterday.
The professor came under the spotlight recently after his wife, Cao Xia, alleged he indulged in extramarital affairs and had an illegitimate daughter.
Duan claimed he had donated sperm to help friends.
The statement denied Cao's claim that Duan had abused his position to help a female PhD student surnamed Zhang.
The institute said Duan's actions have damaged the academy's image and exposed flaws in the management of the institution.
Cao claimed online that her husband has claimed travel fees on behalf of his alleged mistresses and has used research funds to buy property and luxury goods for them.
She said Duan has treated her with indifference, spending considerable time pursuing his mistresses.
In an interview with China Youth Daily, Duan denied all the allegations, saying he has been engaged in research work and has had no spare time for pursuing affairs with other women.
