Wife helped top cop launder bribe money

THE wife of Chongqing's former deputy police chief Peng Changjian was jailed for three and a half years today for helping her husband take bribes and launder money.

Chongqing No.1 Intermediate People's Court also fined Liu Guanying 18,000 yuan (US$2,637) and confiscated more than 1.6 million yuan, China News Service reported today.

Liu, a well-known businesswoman, was found guilty of taking 200,000 yuan in bribes with her husband during 2005 to 2009.

She was also convicted of laundering 1.4 million yuan for her husband through investing in real estate and the stock market.

Police investigations found 16.22 million yuan in Peng's family bank accounts and Liu's business income accounted for 9.17 million yuan.

Prosecutors said Liu led the high life, with every luxury brand in Chongqing calling her to notify her of new collections. She lost more than 800,000 yuan on the stock market and squandered 90,000 yuan in traveling abroad.

Liu's husband Peng was earlier sentenced to life in prison for corruption and protecting gangs.

Peng, 47-year old deputy director of the city's public security bureau, was convicted of taking 4.71 million yuan in bribes and conniving with the city's notorious crime rings.
