Wife in suicide leap after police husband killed
The wife of a police official shot dead by an armed suspect killed herself early yesterday morning, the Ministry of Public Security said.
Liu Wenjuan jumped from the top floor of a hotel in Suning County. According to the Beijing Morning Post, she was with her brother but he failed to prevent her fall.
Liu’s husband, Xue Yongqing, 48, political commissar with the Suning Public Security Bureau in north China’s Hebei Province, had died in hospital early on Tuesday morning.
The ministry issued a statement expressing its condolences.
“Police and their relatives are just ordinary people,” it said. “They have suffered too much and have borne unimaginable pain.”
The couple’s son, a university student in Hebei, has been admitted to hospital after he collapsed on hearing the news of his parents’ deaths.
On Monday, Liu Shuangrui, 55, shot dead two villagers in the village of Xishibao in Suning County and injured three others with a hunting rifle.
Cornered in his house early on Tuesday, he engaged in a gun battle with police, hitting Xue in the head and Assistant Police Chief Yuan Shuai, 34, on the body. Both died in hospital.
The gunman was found dead in his house at about 5am. How he died is the subject of an investigation, police said.
