Wife of corrupt cop faces trial

THE wife of Chongqing's former top cop Peng Changjian, who was jailed for life for corruption and protecting crime gangs, stood trial today for money laundering and bribery.

Businesswoman Liu Guanying is accused of laundering the cash Peng took in bribes, prosecutors said at Chongqing No.1 Intermediate People's Court.

Police found 16.22 million yuan (US$2.37 million) in Peng's family bank accounts and 9.17 million yuan in Liu's business account.

Prosecutors said Liu led the high life, with every luxury brand in Chongqing calling her to notify her of new collections, the court heard.

She lost more than 800,000 yuan in the share market and squandered 90,000 yuan in travel, prosecutors said.

Liu's husband Peng was convicted of taking 4.71 million yuan (US$690,000) in bribes and conniving with the city's notorious crime rings.

Peng, 47, was deputy director of the city's public security bureau and one of the major protective umbrellas of the city's gangs, the same court said last month.
